Any alternatives to concrete for heavy equipment shop flooring?
Our shop caught fire and we are in the process of rebuilding bigger and in a different location. It is 200' x 100' and the new flooring needs to be able to withstand tons of weight. We got a bid of $30,000 for concrete, which we can do I was just curious if there were any other options asphalt, recycled rubber, etc. Please, no suggestions that cut corners, we want to save money without compromising. Thanks in advance for any advice.
How much do diesel/heavy equipment mechanics earn?
I graduated from a state university about 9 months ago with a BS in mechanical engineering. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a job in the field, so I was considering attending a local votech school to become a diesel tech. It consists of 1500 hours of classroom hands on training plus another 300 hours to get your CDL Class A. It's a state run votech school in Florida, so tuition is fairly cheap about $4500 , but I don't know how much they actually earn. What's the average starting salary for diesel techs in Florida? Thanks.

Should i get this 4x2 or look for a 4x4 for moving/picking up heavy equipment?
Im planning to get a truck for my new job. i want a truck so i have a 2nd vehicle, occasstional driving, for work, etc. i have a buddy from school that's selling me his 98' chevy, V8, ext. cab, 8ft bed, 4x2 for 3000, but i would like a 4x4 but i don't want to turn down this offer nor convert it to 4x4 cause that would cost a pretty penny. My main concerns are ice snow, MPG, and strong enough towing compacity i dont think ill be towing a whole lot will i be ok with a 4x2 or is a 4x4 better choice? Also does bigger tires provide me with more weight on the over all truck? Will that provide more traction on ice snow? Sorry as you can see i dont know a whole lot about trucks. Any opinions suggestions would be great thanks for reading D

Apprentice Heavy Equipment Mechanic, any advice, help?
I have recently graduated from college. I took a heavy equipment truck and coach Technician program that lasted 2 years. I have to admit I didnt really have a huge background in this, other than changing oil and greasing machinery.I got a job that lasted about 30 days, guy said I wasnt exprienced enough. Which I thought was obsurd considering I thought an apprenticeship was going to be to learn the trade, but I guess not. I did take longer to do things than the experienced fully qualified mechanics, and didnt know how to do certain things, but isnt an apprentice supposed to learn? Thats what I thought, until he fired me.Can anyone please help me with how I can become a better mechanic. Other than the obvious of tinkering with stuff. Does anyone have any pointers or advice? Help, i seriously do want to be a good mechanic some day, not just one that gets by.I realize the question " how can I become a better mechanic" is pretty general, and maybe a dumb question. But I need advice, help. I dont want to have to go back to school for something else, this is what I want to do.
